What is a tummy tuck?
A tummy-tuck, or abdominoplasty, is a procedure in which excess, loose skin is removed from the belly. The muscles are also tightened. This helps to create a flatter belly, remove stretch marks, and shape the hourglass contour of the belly. Most tummy-tucks are outpatient procedures, so patients go home the same day as surgery. The best candidates for the procedure have loose skin, some weakening of the muscles, and are near their ideal body weights. Weight loss patients are often good candidates for the procedure, as are women following pregnancy, if the skin and muscles are loose. Patients who are slightly overweight can have a tummy tuck, and results will be maintained with moderate amounts of weight loss post-operatively. This is one of the most common cosmetic procedures done in the United States, because it is highly effective and technically straightforward. Incisions are necessary to remove excess skin, but are kept aesthetic by placing them at the waist line and around the belly button. No other incisions are needed for the procedure. My goal is for patients to feel comfortable in two-piece bathing suits after the tummy tuck. The nuances of the procedure create a truly beautiful abdominal contour. I try to minimize the incisions, and I use liposuction in the majority of my tummy tucks to help emphasize an hourglass contour. Some patients are candidates for the mini-abdominoplasty. This procedure focuses on the lower abdomen and requires no incision around the belly button. Determination of which procedure is right for you requires consultation with a surgeon Board Certified in Plastic Surgery. The tummy tuck can be combined with other procedures, such as breast augmentation, breast reduction, or facial procedures in appropriate patients. Risks include bleeding, infection, anesthetic or medical complications, scarring, and healing problems. A thorough medical evaluation is necessary prior to surgery.
