An Interview With Dr. Jejurikar, A Qualified Plastic Surgeon In Frisco

Are there risks and complications to a tummy tuck?

All procedures have risks and complications. Specific risks for tummy tuck include major or minor wound healing complications, skin loss, poor scarring, bleeding, infection, and lack of satisfaction with the results.

How long does tummy tuck surgery take?

A tummy tuck is often combined with liposuction and usually takes 2-3 hours to perform.

Is anesthesia used during the tummy tuck procedure?

Absolutely. All of Dr. Jejurikar's tummy tuck patients have the procedure performed under general anesthesia, meaning that they are completely asleep during the procedure.

How is a tummy tuck performed?

A tummy tuck is usually performed with the patient under general anesthesia (completely asleep). An incision is made from hipbone to hipbone, with care taken to keep the incision low. An incision is also made around the belly button (umbilicus). All extra skin is then excised and removed. The abdominal wall muscles are tightened extensively and a new opening is made for the belly button. The incisions are then closed predominantly with fine, absorbable sutures.

Who is an ideal candidate for a tummy tuck?

Ideal candidates are close to their ideal body weight and done having children. Patients should also refrain from tobacco use and maintain a relatively healthy lifestyle. Patients who are not close to their ideal body weight should be realistic about their outcome after surgery; tummy tuck is not a cure for obesity; rather it is an abdominal reshaping and contouring procedure.

What is a tummy tuck?

A tummy tuck is extensive reshaping of the abdominal wall. It can be performed on men and women and usually is done after multiple pregnancies or after significant weight loss. Through an incision made low on the abdominal wall, excess skin is removed, the umbilicus (belly button) is reshaped, and the abdominal wall is significantly tightened. The results is a slimmer, more youthful abdomen.

What are the benefits of a tummy tuck?

A tummy tuck dramatically reshapes the appearance of the abdominal wall. Specifically, the upper abdominal bulge is eliminated and overhanging skin of the lower abdominal wall (apron or pannus) is excised and discarded.
