1. What is Arnica montana, I have heard that it reduces swelling and bruising?
Arnica (also known as sneezewort or wolfs bane) is a plant native to Russia which has been used for centuries to treat bruising, swelling and muscle soreness. There are a number of studies in the scientific literature, but results have been mixed. So, it is not clear if Arnica is truly effective. Many plastic surgeons recommend this to their patients and, fortunately, very few serious problems have been reported. Like many homeopathic medications it has not been rigorously tested so the effective dose and safety profile are not well understood.
2. What about Bromelain? Does this help with swelling and bruising as well?
Bromelain is a compound found in the stems of pineapples. It has been around for decades although it has not been widely studied. It is recognized by the FDA as a food additive and is generally considered safe. When taken orally before surgery it may result in less swelling, inflammation and pain. Unfortunately, it may also result in more bleeding. More scientific studies need to be performed to determine what the effective, safe dose should be. All "herbal" or "natural" supplements should be disclosed to your doctor prior to surgery since some of these do have an association with bleeding problems.
3. What is a mini tummy tuck, and when is it better than a regular tummy tuck?
A mini tummy tuck involves cutting out excess abdominal skin and fat in the lower abdomen through a transverse incision which can usually be hidden in clothing. The mini tummy tuck does not require the creation of a new belly button. The amount of skin removed is less than in a full tummy tuck. The mini tummy tuck is recommended when there is not a lot of extra skin to remove.
4. Is there a difference in the size of the scars between the mini and the full tummy tuck?
The scar in a mini tummy tuck is usually a little smaller.
5. Is pregnancy after a tummy tuck safe?
It is safe. However, it may change the results so that the cosmetic appearance of the abdomen is not as good as it was before the pregnancy.
6. Is it better to do a tummy tuck before or after pregnancy?
If you know you will be getting pregnant in the near future, it is best to wait and have the tummy tuck after the pregnancy.
