An Interview With Dr. Sam Speron, M.D., F.A.C.S. , A Qualified Plastic Surgeon For Moms In Harwood Heights

1. What is a tummy tuck?

A tummy tuck removes excess fat and skin, and can restore weakened or separated muscles creating an abdominal profile that is smoother and firmer.

2. Will a person have a scar after the tummy tuck?

Yes, they will have a scar. It depends on the type of tummy tuck, but generally you will have a scar across the pubis line from hip to hip. Sometimes, an additional incision is necessary around the belly button and that will create another scar.

3. How much does a tummy tuck cost?

The cost will vary from surgeon to surgeon and location to location. You can expect a price anywhere from $5,000-10,000 depending on the type of procedure, time in OR, anesthesia, etc.

4. How long do the results of a tummy tuck last?

Your results should last for many years. However, there are factors that compromise the results such as pregnancy, aging, and weight gain. In short, you will always look better than you would have looked at a future time point than you would have without the tummy tuck.

5. Will Smoking slow down the Healing Process?

Yes, smoking has a negative effect on almost everything. We encourage patients to stop smoking 3-4 weeks before and after surgery.

6. What are the different types of tummy tuck procedures?

All tummy tuck procedures involve removing excess skin and tightening of the abdominal muscles, except the endoscopic tummy tuck. The endoscopic tummy tuck involves tightening the abdominal muscles and removing a small amount of fat. A full or traditional tummy tuck corrects imperfections above and below the belly button. A mini tummy tuck only addresses the area below the belly button. An extended tummy tuck expands to the areas outside of the abdomen also known as the love handles. A circumferential tummy tuck is performed on patients who have lost a significant amount of weight and are left with a band loose skin around the entire body. There are several different types for every patient's needs.

7. What factors should I consider when selecting a tummy tuck surgeon?

First, you want a surgeon who is board certified. You want someone with experience in the procedure you are considering. Ask to see before and after pictures or speak to patients who have had the same procedure. Ask who will be doing all your post-operative care. Last, you want someone who you feel completely comfortable with and trust.
