1. What is a tummy tuck?
Abdominoplasty, known more commonly as a tummy tuck, is a major surgical procedure to remove excess skin and fat from the middle and lower abdomen and to tighten the muscles of the abdominal wall. The procedure can dramatically reduce the appearance of a protruding abdomen and remove much of the excess skin and fat from the lower tummy.
2. Will a person have a scar after the tummy tuck?
Yes, the procedure does produce a permanent scar, which, depending on the extent of the original problem and the surgery required to correct it, can extend from hip to hip. The length of the scar will be discussed and decided on prior to the surgery and can be smaller or larger depending on your body type and concerns. Our scars may actually appear to worsen during the first three to six months as they heal, but this is normal. Expect it to take nine months to a year before your scars flatten out and lighten in color. While they ll never disappear completely, abdominal scars will not show under most clothing, even under bathing suits. Prior to the surgery the "optimal" position for your scar will be discussed with you.
3. How much does a tummy tuck cost?
Tummy tucks can cost as much as $12,000 for a full abdominoplasty (including operating room and anesthesia charges) or can be significantly less if you only need a "mini" procedure for your concerns.
4. How long do the results of a tummy tuck last?
Abdominoplasty, whether partial or complete, produces excellent results for patients with weakened abdominal muscles or excess skin. And in most cases, the results are long lasting, if you follow a balanced diet and exercise regularly.
5. Will smoking slow down the healing process?
If you smoke, plan to quit at least 6 to 8 weeks before your surgery and not to resume for at least two weeks after your surgery. Smoking can seriously impair the healing process and is something you should discuss with me, so we can adjust the timing of surgery so that you will have the best chance for complication-free surgery.
6. What are the different types of tummy tuck procedures?
I perform many different types of tummy tucks including full or major ones as well as "mini" procedures for just the lower abdomen. I also perform a surgery known as a panniculectomy to remove excess skin and fat of just the very low abdomen common after significant weight loss or gastric bypass surgery. A consultation is the best way for both of us to review your concerns and the appropriate surgical options.
7. What factors should I consider when selecting a tummy tuck surgeon?
Individuals considering plastic surgery often feel a bit overwhelmed by the number of options and techniques being promoted today. However, as a plastic surgeon, I can help. In deciding which is the right treatment approach for you, will consider effectiveness, safety, cost and appropriateness for your needs. This is called surgical judgment, a skill that is developed through surgical training and experience. I also use this judgment to help prevent complications; to handle unexpected occurrences during surgery; and to treat complications when they occur.
