An Interview With Dr. Valentini, A Qualified Plastic Surgeon In Hopkinsville

What is a tummy tuck?

Tummy Tuck or Abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure to remove excess skin and fatty tissue from the abdomen. During the procedure, muscles of the abdominal wall are also tightened. This is not a procedure to lose weight.

What are the benefits of a tummy tuck?

A tummy Tuck or Abdominoplasty will improve the shape and the tone of the abdomen and remove sagging skin and fat. The result is a more normal appearance to the body with smoother contours. It can be combined with other body contouring procedures.

Are there risks and complications to a tummy tuck?

Possible risk for Tummy Tuck or Abdominoplasty include, bleeding, infection, fluid accumulation, delayed or poor healing, skin loss, blood clots, scarring, changes in skin sensation and irregularity of contours. These risks and their prevention are discussed in detail during the patient's consultation.

How long does tummy tuck surgery take?

Surgery for Tummy Tuck or Abdominoplasty usually takes 3 hours or a little longer based on the requirements of the specific procedure performed. It is often combined with Liposuction to refine the waist line. After the procedure, patients go to the recovery room for 45 min to 1 hour before being discharged.

Is anesthesia used during the tummy tuck procedure?

This procedure is either performed under general anesthesia or more commonly under deep intravenous sedation with local anesthetics. Patients are constantly monitored by an anesthesiologist or a certified nurse anesthetist.

How is a tummy tuck performed?

Tummy Tuck or Abdominoplasty is an outpatient procedure performed by a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon either in a Surgicenter or an Accredited Surgical facility. Drains are usually placed and will remain 6-7 days. After the procedure dressings are applied and an abdominal binder is used to minimize swelling and support the new contours during the healing phase. Recovery is about 2 weeks after which patients can gradually resume normal activities. Full exercise could be resumed at 3 weeks.

Good candidates for Tummy Tuck or Abdominoplasty are:

-Patients whose weight is stable.

-Healthy individuals who have no medical conditions that could impair the healing process.
