An Interview With Dr. Jennifer Keagle, M.D. , A Qualified Plastic Surgeon For Moms In Huntington Park

1. How should I prepare for abdominoplasty surgery?

There is no real preparation. Seeing your plastic surgeon and discussing your expectations is the key.

2. What happens during the tummy tuck procedure?

During the tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) the abdominal skin is elevated and separated from the underlying muscles. In the process the belly button (umbilicus) is moved to a different position. As well, the abdominal muscles (rectus abdominus) can be tightened (plicated).

3. What is the abdominoplasty recovery period like?

Immediately postoperatively you will have a pain pump placed which will help with postoperative pain. You should plan on spending the first night either in the hospital or at an aftercare facility. There are usually 2 drains placed which will be removed most often within the first 3-7 days. You will be asked to walk in a hunched position for the first week, as well, so as not to put too much tension on the abdominoplasty closure. That being said, you should plan on taking off the first week after surgery from your normal activities/work.

4. What are the common side effects of abdominoplasty?

One should plan on some bruising and pain. However the pain pump has helped significantly and is used by many Plastic Surgeons. Other possible complications are blood clots, fluid/blood collections, numbness and wound problems. This is not a comprehensive list and your surgeon will go over it with you preoperatively. Fortunately, most major complications are rare.

5. Does a male tummy tuck differ from a female tummy tuck?

Everyone' s anatomy is different. Preoperative consultation is the key in anyone' s decision to do surgery.

6. How can I maintain my figure after undergoing abdominoplasty surgery?

Just maintain your weight. Eat right and exercise (when indicated by your surgeon).

7. How do I find a tummy tuck surgeon in my area?

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) has a referral site for its member surgeons. You should have this procedure performed only by a board-certified plastic surgeon. If you are in the LA-area come see me!
