An Interview With Dr. Bond, A Qualified Plastic Surgeon In Newark

Will a person have a scar after the tummy tuck?

The scar will run from hip to hip approximately. I determine the length of the incision by following the fold of fat and skin when the patient is in a sitting position. In my office, I start a program of scar control as soon as the wound is healed to create the flattest, lightest, prettiest scar possible.

How long does tummy tuck surgery take?

A tummu Tuck is a 3 hour surgery.

What factors should I consider when selecting a tummy tuck surgeon?

When choosing a Plastic Surgeon, look for one who is currently ASAPS Board certified. Be sure to look at examples of the doctor's work and don't be afraid to ask a lot of questions. You may also want to speak to one of the doctor's patients who already had the procedure. Pick a surgeon who makes you feel comfortable and confident.

Is anesthesia used during the tummy tuck procedure?

I always perform Tummy Tucks under general anesthesia.

How is a tummy tuck performed?

Under general anesthesia, the incision is made, usually from hip to hip. It is placed strategically to be hidden under a bikini or low-cut lingerie. The underlying muscles are plicated (sewn together) to create flatness. The excess skin is pulled down and removed. I liposuction the upper abdomen for extreme flatness, then the waist and flanks to bring back the contours and curves. I close the incision with removable stitches and place the patient in a compression garment with sterile foam padding to keep down swelling and allow the skin to heal smoothly back to the muscle. Drains are inserted to remove excess fluid and are removed about a week after the surgery.

Will smoking slow down the healing process after a tummy tuck?

Smoking is the worst thing you can do before surgery. Smoking constricts the blood vessels and prevents healing. I require that patients stop smoking at least three weeks before and after surgery.

What is the abdominoplasty recovery period?

We usually allow at least three to four weeks for recovery after a Tummy Tuck. Of course, this depends on the type of work you re returning to. Patients have gone back to more sedentary office jobs after 2 weeks; jobs that require a lot of physical effort may need five to six weeks.
