An Interview With Dr. Juris Bunkis, MD, FACS , A Qualified Plastic Surgeon For Moms In Newport Beach

1. Will abdominoplasty tighten up loose skin?

An abdominoplasty by definition results in a resection of all the loose skin between the navel and the belly button, very definitely tightening the abdominal wall skin!

2. Can the problems come back after abdominoplasty?

The looseness that prompted the desire for an abdominoplasty is usually caused by either pregnancy or skin laxity after weight loss. If a patient gets pregnant after an abdominoplasty, or just plain eats too much, puts on more weight, and then loses the weight again, laxity will recur. However,if a patient is careful about gaining weight in the future, there is no need for a second tummy tuck in a patient s lifetime.

3. Is a Tummy Tuck a good way to lose weight?

Absolutely not! A Tummy Tuck tightens loose skin after weight has been lost!

4. Can men benefit from a Tummy Tuck?

Men who have lost weight will definitely benefit from a tummy tuck.

5. Will I feel pain afterwards?

As with breast augmentations discussed above, our recovery today is much quicker and less painful than in the past, largely due to a gentler handling of the tissues and due to our insertion of pain pumps during surgery - these are fine catheters that allow the instillation of local anesthesia into the surgical site, continuously for the first three days.

6. Why do patients seek a tummy tuck?

Patients seek tummy tucks to tighten excess skin which can occur as a result of pregnancy or obesity.

7. Is the recovery time different for full and mini tummy tuck

In a mini tummy tuck, the dissection is not carried above the navel and the muscles are not repaired as extensively. The less is done the less it will hurt and the quicker the recovery.
