What are the benefits of a tummy tuck?
A tummy tuck is aimed at removing excess abdominal skin/skin folds, tightening the abdominal wall muscle layer, and improving the overall contour of the abdomen to make it flatter. It can also remove stretch marks in the lower abdomen.
Who is an ideal candidate for a tummy tuck?
A good candidate for a tummy tuck is an adult who is medically healthy, has realistic expectations from the surgery, a non-smoker, and is able to give informed consent.
What are the different types of tummy tuck procedures?
Every patient' s surgical plan for contouring the abdomen is individualized. A basic tummy tuck involves removing the extra skin of the abdomen, tightening the muscle wall, and making a "new " belly button (we actually bring the original belly-button through a new hole). Some patients may need some liposuction of the flank region as well. Patients who only have extra lower abdominal skin and an otherwise taut abdominal wall may only need a "panniculectomy " or removal of the lower abdominal skin, without any tightening of the abdominal wall or relocation of the belly-button. Some patients who do not have extra abdominal skin or a lax abdominal muscle layer, may only require liposuction of the abdomen.
What factors should I consider when selecting a tummy tuck surgeon?
It is safe and wise to have a plastic surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery do your tummy tuck procedure. The surgery itself should be done either in a hospital or accredited outpatient facility. Depending on the patient, this procedure can be done as an outpatient (same day surgery). However, in some patients it may be safer to be admitted overnight, especially if multiple procedures are done simultaneously.
How should I prepare for abdominoplasty surgery?
It is always good to have all your questions fully answered by your prospective surgeon, and be comfortable with the surgical and recouperation process. It is imperative to have realistic expectations, and this should be discussed in detail with your surgeon. It takes about 3-4 weeks to heal and there will be 4-6 weeks of lifting/exercising restrictions. Additionally, prior to surgery, it is safe to have your Primary Care Provider or medical physician "clear " you for prospective surgery.
